Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about process piping and fabrication.

What is the advantage of shop fabrication vs. field fabrication?

Shop fabrication allows controlled conditions for welding, better quality control, and faster field installation. Complex assemblies can be pre-fitted and tested before delivery. This reduces on-site labor hours, minimizes shutdown duration, and often improves weld quality. For large projects, a combination of shop prefab and field welding provides the best balance of quality and cost.

What testing do you perform on piping welds?

Standard testing includes visual inspection and hydrostatic pressure testing—filling the system with water and pressurizing to 1.5x operating pressure to verify integrity. For critical applications or when required by code, we coordinate radiographic testing (RT) with third-party inspection agencies. All testing is documented with certificates for your records and inspector review.

Can you add connections to an existing system without shutdown?

In many cases, yes. Hot tapping allows us to drill into a pressurized pipe and install a new connection without depressurizing the system. This is common for adding branch connections to chilled water or condenser water loops in facilities that can't tolerate downtime. However, hot tapping isn't suitable for all situations—pipe condition, material, and pressure must be evaluated. We'll assess your system and recommend the safest approach.

How do you handle insulation and pipe covering?

We install mechanical insulation for chilled water (to prevent condensation) and hot water/steam (to prevent heat loss and protect personnel). Common materials include fiberglass with ASJ jacket for indoor applications and aluminum-clad for outdoor or industrial environments. Insulation thickness is determined by energy code requirements and condensation control needs. We can also coordinate with specialized insulation contractors for large-scale projects.
